For example, in the year 1901, A.B. Graham, a principal at a school in Ohio, established “clubs” outside of the school in order to encourage vocational agriculture. Corn growing clubs and contests for young people have begun in a number of states located in the Midwestern region, including Texas, Mississippi, Georgia, Iowa, and others.

Over the course of the following decade, schools in at least eighteen different states started offering vocational agriculture education programs. A national FFA association was established by the states in question in the year 1928. The next year, blue and “corn gold” were chosen to be the official colors of the organization.
